Rahman’s favorite enlivens Sabarimala

Rahman’s favorite on the drums, none other than Sivamani was at Sabarimala recently. You can’t keep this man away from rhythms and he proved this once again when he gave an impromptu performance right at the foot of the 18 holy steps that lead to the sannidhanam.
Of course, he had not carried his
drums along with him and so had to provide his rhythms on small vessels and other assortments that doubled up as percussion instruments. This was a different type of entertainment which the Ayappa devotees thoroughly enjoyed.

Kadhalna Summa illa

Music review By Malathy Sundaram
Kadhalna Summa Illa: Produced by Raj Television Network( a pioneering move, this) and directed by Ilankannan( of ‘Ottran’ fame) and starring Ravi Krishna, Kamalini Mukerjee, Tejashree and others. The film is supposed to be a remake of the Telugu movie Gamyam. Three music directors have worked together for the movie, which has 5 full-fledged songs and two ‘mini’ pieces.
Jai Shambo...Vocals: TippuLyrics: Pa.VijayMusic: Vidyasagar

A foot-tapping number in native style rendered unusually with vim and vigour by Tippu. Basically full of youthful enthusiasm and aiming for the stars. ‘Thandhi kambi suruthi, adhai meettudhu paar kuruvi’ is cute imagery. The guitars, keys, flute and rhythms all appear equally enthusiastic. Touches upon Aberi raga. Might have youth appeal though not an original tune.

Ennamo Seydhai Nee...Vocals: Udit Narayan, SujathaLyrics: Na.MuthukumarMusic: Manisharma
Mmmm, a melodious number with the same Aberi touch! The delicate sounds opening this song lead to the ‘pa-pa, pa-pa-ni-pa-pa’ whispers from the flute and then the song unfolds to a jaunty rhythm. In the veena interlude, both ‘ni’ swaras seem to be used. The sax and the flute (both bass and top flutes) combine deliciously . We have a crisp nagaswaram passage too . Fun to hear the ghatam follow the words’eppadi’ and ‘yetthanai’. Sung with great relish by Udit and Sujatha’s voice soars like a lark!

One Way...Vocals: Noel, RanjithLyrics: Pa.VijayMusic: E.S.Murthy
Quite a cheery rendition of a few philosophical truths about life . Touches upon the vicissitudes of existence in a breezy manner. A fast paced song with just a tinge of hip-hop to it. It is guitar, keys and rhythms all the way. Well sung by both.

Samayamae...Vocals: SujathaLyrics: Na.MuthukumarMusic: E.S.Murthy
A slow but very melodious song sung in a husky manner by Sujatha. How well she modulates her voice! Pleasing inputs from the flute, guitar, sitar and sax, apart from the keys. Each note preserves the languorous mood –of love and yearning. Appears to be on the Natabairavi scale. Could strike a chord with women listeners.

Juram...Vocals: Anuradha Sriram, RanjithLyrics: Pa.VijayMusic: Vidyasagar
Well, Anuradha is synonymous with naughtiness and she revels in this song, which puts on an elaborate show of innocence! Raucous lyrics. Very racy breathless native rhythms along with nagaswaram and some violin –and you go ‘phew!’ at the end! Nothing new about the mettu.

Sound of Love...Vocals: E.S.Murthy
An ‘ensemble’ of instruments, where you hear the flute, guitar, keys, sitar and vocal chorus ( women)which is well harmonized. Interestingly, the first part is in raga Kalyani and the faster second part( after the ghatam) is in Mayamalavagowla. Pretty!

Love Emotion...Music: E.S.Murthy
A sloka, some mridangam and tabla and rhythms.just for 45 seconds.
Verdict:
All three composers have put in some good work. We don’t get to hear cacophonous music here, but nothing stands out as exceptional pieces too. One truly hopes the director films them sensitively. E.S.Murthy deserves mention.

Sneha’s film in trouble

Sneha will be seen for the first time in an action flick titled Bhavani I P S, the remake of Vyjayanthi I P S which starred Vijayashanthi. The shooting of the film began in Tirunelveli a couple of weeks back. This film is being produced by Sri Movie Makers and directed by Arthi Kumar. Sneha has reportedly lost a few kilos and is said to be learning different types of stunts for the film.
Few scenes involving Vivek was shot in the Ramar Temple in Palayamkottai a few days back. That’s when few office bearers of religious outfits like the Hindu Munnani and Yadavar Maha Sabai visited the shooting spot and complained that the crew had not taken permission from the authorities to shoot at the temple. However the director insisted that he had completed the necessary formalities and had obtained permission to shoot there. Further on the spot was visited by the police officials who brought in order and let the shooting continue.

Yuvan accepts acting offer

Yuvan Shankar Raja has been long evading acting offers that have come his way. Of course, he has made fleeting appearances in Saroja and Punnagai Poove but those can’t be called acting stints by any stretch of imagination. But now, the young music director has been coaxed into taking up a good role and the man
who convinced him is Venkat Prabhu.
After two successful outings as director-composer, the duo will now be testing their director-actor combination in the forthcoming film Goa. It will not be a simple cameo; it will be a well written part that will have a bearing on the story. So, get ready to watch Yuvan, the actor.

An Anniyan of a different kind!

Krishnaleelai, the term is usually associated with pranks played by Lord Krishna, which more often than not involved putting women in trouble. But director Selvan, who has formerly made Suri, has a different take and he will be telling us that through his new movie Krishnaleelai.
This Krishnaleelai will be more about
the deeds of Lord Krishna that ended the atrocities of the tyrannical king Kamsa. The hero of the movie (Jeevan) will be seen purging the society of many evils. The storyline might seem similar to many themes that have been made in Tamil cinema like Anniyan, Gentleman etc. But the director begs to differ from this view. He insists that this movie will be different from the already existing lot of do-gooder themes. Krishnaleelai is being produced by Kavithalaya and it is said that K. Balachander was hugely impressed when he first heard this story from the director. The movie is reported to have shaped up well and is currently in its last phase of shooting.

Peter Hein turns director

After establishing himself as a successful stuntman, Peter Hein is now keen to expand his horizons. It is being said that he is planning to direct a film.
When asked, the master of kung-fu says, 'Yes, that's true. I am planning to direct a film myself and that's why I am being choosy with my projects. I have been approached by some producers. I will be starting the project soon.'
Peter finds himself lucky to have worked with some great directors and actors. 'I am fortunate to work with the best. Everyone I have worked with is extremely talented and totally professional. Many heroes like to risk their limbs by doing the stunts themselves. But I insist that we use our boys for certain sequences.' The direction bug seems to be biting everyone in the tinsel town with no exceptions.

Instead of Vikram - Ameer!

When Ameer and Seeman were locked up in jail over the Sri Lankan Tamil protest issue, they talked about a great deal of things. And one of the things they discussed is making a movie about the Sri Lankan Tamil issue. Sources tell us that Ameer has already written a script and had been considering Vikram to play the lead. But, say our sources, since Vikram is
very busy with several projects, Ameer himself has decided to play the role!

'Ayan' will exceed expectations – KV Anand

'Ayan' will be a movie that would be entertaining with Surya at his best, says director K V Anand.
Speaking about the film, Anand, says, ' it has been a tremendous effort by Surya to fit the role. He has developed into a graceful actor since Nerukku Ner. Thanks to proper guidance by directors like Bala and Ameer, Surya became 'Super Surya', says Anand.
On Ayan, he says, ' we did everything as planned accordingly. When I sat with writer Subha for discussion, I decided it should be close to reality. Doing a movie for AVM banner is not an easy task. One has to keep the production house's niche in Tamil cinema. Thankfully Ayan did everything'.
Anand thanks Tamannah, who had been very supportive and took all efforts to leave her screen presence playing Surya's ladylove, Anand adds, ' I thank my cinematographer Prabhu, who has captured what I envisaged in my script on to the screen'.
Ayan is a movie to reckon with in the industry, he adds.

I am against remixes: Harris Jayaraj

Harris Jayaraj is an accomplished music composer, who has carved a niche for himself coming up big time chartbusters. At a time when every other music composer is keen on coming out with a remix, Harris Jayaraj says, ' I am against remixing songs. If music composers remix my tunes after 15 -20 years, that would make me happy. As a composer, I am not excited about remixing'. On the crop of young music directors in Kollywood today, he says, 'I loved the song 'Kangal Irandal' in Subramaniapuram composed by James Vasanthan. I also admire the songs in 'Veyyil' set to tunes by G V Prakash. Asked why he has not come out with any music album or stage shows, Harris Jayaraj says, ' I am busy with my commitments. I am not behind name or fame. However in a couple of years from now, I may come out with an album'.

The youthful entertainer in Hindi won terrific accolades for its highly entertaining elements. The Tamil version would feature Bharath and Tamannah in lead roles. Plans are on to shoot the film early next year. Bharath is currently acting in 'Arumugham' and is ready to shoot for 'Thiruttani', to be directed by Perarasu. Tamannah is acting in a host of films now including the Suriya starrer 'Ayan' and Oscar Films' 'Anandha Thandavam'.

MGR to star in a brand new film

One of the most popular movie stars Tamilnadu has ever seen MGR is making a comeback to films. It would be an animation flick from the stables of Mayabimbham Media (P) Ltd who had earlier made the 3D film 'V4'. The 3D film starring MGR has been titled 'Puratchi Thalaivan'. The producers of the film have said that MGR had last performed in the film 'Maduraiyai Meeta Sundara Pandiyan' and proudly proclaim that they are bringing him back to the silver screen after all these years. 'Puratchi Thalaivan' would be directed by Venky Baboo and produced by Sridevi Rao. A team of 3D animators would indulge themselves in the job of recreating the magic of MGR on screen. One wonders who the animated heroine of the film would be. Would it be Saroja Devi or Jayalalitha. Who knows….the think tank behind MGR might prefer newer heroines like Trisha, Shriya or Nayantara.

Vijay and Vadivelu in Rush Hour!

Tamil cinema is growing. And it's growing at a really fast rate. There have been directors that brought Hollywood stories to Tamil cinema. Most notably A.R.Muragadoss's Ghajini (Memento in Hollywood), Gautham Menon's Vaaranam Aayiram (draws inspiration from 1994's Forrest Gump), Prabhu Deva's Pokiri(daws inspiration from The Departed), and Mani Ratnam's Nayagan (The Godfather). These are just some films. Now that the budgets for films is increasing, we might get to see the big exposure that Hollywood puts on their films in Tamil! Here are some movies I would like to see get made in Tamil:
I Am Legend- If there is one actor who can do a better job than Will Smith, then it's Surya. He's one of the only actors who can do this much intensity in a film. You can also put Asin as the guest role of the mother who comes to rescue the main character. It's a big film, and considering it'swith a big budget, Shankar should be director. Music should also be A.R.Rahman.
Ocean's Eleven- A heist film in Tamil would be great! Imagine if Vijay, Ajith, Surya, Vikram, and some other big stars in Tamil cinema came together and made this remake! Also you can put a lot of the top actresses as well. This film could possibly be the best cast that any tamil film has made! Director should be Venkat Prabhu, because this is his kind of movie. Also music should be Yuvan Shankaraja.
Cast Away- If Kamal wanted to make one last film before he retired, then he should make this film in tamil. The whole film would show him and what he does to survive on an island. It needs an actor who can make the audience sit and watch one person for more than half of the movie. I think Kamal could do this without any problem! Direction should be Gautham Menon to give a Hollywood touch, and music should be Harris Jeyraj(It would be nice to see the Menon-Jeyraj combo one last time).
Scarface- I think Rajini or Vijay should do this one. They could do it Billa style, or just do it regular Indian style. Direction should be K.S. Ravikumar and music should be Vijay Anthony. I wonder if they make Scarface survive in the remake....
The Pursuit of Happiness- This definitly should be remade. Probably Surya or Ajith can do this movie, or even younger actor like Arya or Jayam Ravi. Direction should be A.R. Murragadoss. Music should be the young Dharan.
Rush Hour- Imagine Vijay and Vadivelu as two cops trying to track down gangsters in India and abroad. Well, this film would be a great remake with a nice mix of action and comedy. Direction should be fast, so it has to be Dharani. Music should be Vidyasagar.
There are so many other movies I would like to see happen, but that is just another dream.

Six-Packs doesn’t work for Kollywood

It was only the actresses who go through hard time to get the body they want, but now our heroes have jumped in that pool as well.
It was latest trend in Kollywood for a six pack, but the critics say it doesn’t work! First it was Vishal, who got six packs for Sathyam but if flopped at the box office. Then it was actor Suriya for the movie Vaaranam Aayiram, unfortunately it too looks shaky.
Now actor Shaam is working out to get six packs to act in a Telugu movie. Good luck Shaam.

Ash– busy with Raavan, Endiran in dismay

The third leg of shooting of Endhiran, which was scheduled to be held in Kulu Manali was cancelled as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is busy with Mani Rathnam’s Ravan. The Endhiran team, sans Aishwarya, left for Kulu a few days ago but were not able to film the song sequence as planned because the actress was
caught up in Mani’s shooting in Kochi. The disappointed crew returned back to Chennai to can those scenes that does not require her. It is now believed that Shankar-Rajini and team will leave for Kulu when Ash completes her commitments with Mani Rathnam’s Ravan.
