China Welcomes Pasanga

It could not get any better for a debutant director in Kollywood. Pasanga, directed by Pandiraj, has been screened in film festivals across the world (literally) and won awards all over. If there is one country where Pandiraj and producer Sasikumar have not travelled with Pasanga, it must be China. But the quest is over as Pasanga has been selected for the 19th China Golden Rooster & Hundred flowers Film Festival. This festival will be held at Jiangyin, a city in China from October 11 to October 16, 2010. Director Pandiraj and producer Sasikumar have been invited to participate in the festival and both are leaving for China for the same.

'Pasanga' is the only Indian film that has been selected for this prestigious festival. It has also won National awards for Best Tamil film, Best dialogues and Best child artists.

This evening, Mani Ratnam will launch the audio of ‘Rattha Charithram’ at Sathyam Cinemas, which will be attended by who’s who of Tamil film industry.

Suriya and Vivek Oberoi have performed lead roles in this multilingual film (Tamil, Telugu and Hindi). The music in Telugu has already been released before few days back in Hyderabad. Durai Dayanidhi and Vivek Karunakaran of Cloud Nine Productions have acquired the Tamil rights.

The film is based on real life clashes between Parithala Ravi, a gangster turned politician and Maddelacheruvu Suri, who plotted murder plans against him by remaining inside prison.

Tamil Film Industry Adapts Hollywood

‘We are closer to Hollywood’ – such statements aren’t something new as we would have heard our filmmakers and producers uttering it over and again. But on pars, there are few auteurs exerting their earnest efforts of pulling such statements into reality.

Some of the upcoming Tamil releases will follow the ‘Hollywood pattern’. The major factor is that there will be no songs and unwanted parallel tracks of romance and comedy.

Gowtham Menon claims that he has pioneered with this mission as his upcoming film ‘Nadunisi Naigal’ doesn’t boast any songs or background score either. The filmmaker has signed a top-charting sound designer from Bollywood to work on sound effects. In fact, A.R. Rahman himself has appreciated his efforts.

Next to join this bandwagon will be ‘Payanam’. This bilingual movie made by Radha Mohan has Nagarjuna playing the lead role. The film is about flight hijack and a commando striving to save them. The film has a running length of just 100mins.

But the trend was already set by some of the best actors like Kamal Haasan as his yesteryear film ‘Kuruthi Punal’ was a stunning action thriller with no songs.

Siruthai at Historic Locales

Doubtlessly, Karthi becomes the star of 2010 as all his films ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’, ‘Paiyya’ and ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’ have been tremendous hits. Basking into glorious successes, the actor is vigorously shooting for his next film titled ‘Siruthai’. The film as known is a remake of yesteryear Telugu blockbuster ‘Vikramakudu’. Recently, the film’s climax involving breathtaking sequences were shot at Karnataka’s most famous Badami Hills at Bagalkot District. Art director Rajeevan had erected the best set works at 300ft hilltop. Both Karthi and Tamanah had to experience whole lot of speculative shots. Yesterday, the film’s shoot took place at Gingee Fort in Arcot District. Both Karthi and Tamanah shot their portions and the crowd went irresistibly excited watching Karthi in police costumes. Even the police patrols felt more difficult to handle the situation. With just few outdoor portions left to be completed, filmmaker Siva and producers are planning to wrap up the shooting by November. Keep logging to the column for updates on this fast-paced ‘Siruthai’.

Monicka in Kannada remake of ‘Charlie Chaplin’

The producers and filmmakers in Hindi film industry are known for their smartness over remaking some of our Tamil films by adding more shades to it. This was quite illustrious with ‘Houseful’, which was inspired from Kamal Haasan-Prabhu Deva starrer ‘Kadhala Kadhala’. The examples don’t end here and again ‘Charlie Chaplin’ is the need for this context.

The film was patently remade in Hindi titled ‘No Entry’ and featured Anil Kapoor, Fardeen Khan with Salman Khan playing the role of Livingston. The film was again remade in Tamil as ‘Happy Husbands’ that was a good hit.

Obviously, the remake now goes to Kannada with the same title of ‘Happy Husbands’. The film has Ravichandran in lead role and Monicka stars opposite him in female lead role. The rest of star-casts are yet to be finalized.

Sun Pictures To Acquire Kaavalan Against Vijay’s Wish

It was reported in some sections of the press some weeks ago that producer-director Shakthi Chidambaram had acquired the distribution and release rights of the Vijay-Asin starrer ‘Kaavalan’ at a whopping Rs.40 crores.
Not many were aware that Shakti had done so and the news, which appeared in a leading daily, has now stirred a Pandora’s Box! Shakti had earlier taken a loan of Rs.50 lakhs from a nationalized bank to make his ‘Guru Sishyan’. When the Bank came across the news item, they called Shakti over and gave him a verbal ‘dressing down’ as to why wasn’t he repaying the loan when he could acquire a film’s rights at an amount which is more than thirty times the loan amount.

In order to avoid the consistent pressured being applied on him by the Bank to repay the loan he had taken in making ‘Guru Sishyan’. Making full use of his plight, Sun Pictures has moved in for the kill and is said to be demanding Shakti that he sell off the distribution and release rights of ‘Kaavalan’ to them. Still to forget the ‘bitter’ experience when Sun Pictures released his ‘Vettaikaran’, Vijay is reportedly against selling the rights to Sun Pictures. It is, however, believed that Sun Pictures might have the final laugh in the matter!

Nayantara Brand Ambassador Of Pothys

Nayantara, the biggest newsmaker and ultra gorgeous actress of south Indian cinema has signed her first endorsement deal for a record price.

She has become the Brand Ambassador of designer collection of Pothys, one of the biggest textile showrooms in south. The actress who has never done any advertisements so far has been politely refusing umpteen offers that came her way as she believed that people should come to the theatres to watch her. She did not want to dilute her exclusivity and aura around her, a strategy which worked to her advantage.

But now it seems she has changed her strategies and has signed this deal. The actress was not available for comment but sources close to the textile shop says: “ Nayantara is the biggest brand in all the four major southern states, where we have showrooms. She will be endorsing our Diwali 2010 collections of designer sarees and with the festival of lights around the corner; we want to cash in on her popularity and reach among family audiences”. The buzz is that the ad will be shot by ace cameraman Ratnavel (of Enthiran fame) and directed by Shankar who is director AL Vijay’s assistant.

‘Mankatha’ will hit the screens on Ajith Birthday

Venkat Prabhu finally conformed that Ajith’s ‘Mankatha’ shooting will start from October 20 in Hyderabad. And the director clear one more thing that ‘Mankatha’ is not a gangster flick and also its not inspired from any Hollywood film. Its about different people trying to do something and how the equation changes with one particular incident.

Kelu Nayanar, Arakkal Ayesha and Vavali

Any guesses what the headline is trying to explain? Well, these are the names of the characters played by Prithiviraj, Genelia and Prabhu Deva in Santosh Sivan’s ‘Urumi’, respectively.

Says Prithviraj, who is also one of the producers of the period film, “Santosh Sivan narrated me the script long back and things are finally in place now. It is an intense story with a universal appeal”.

Besides Prithviraj, Prabhu Deva and Genelia, the film also has top stars like Vikram, Vidya Balan, Tabu, Nithya Menon, Jagathy Sreekumar and Amol Gupte. Also, more than 40 British actors are there in the film.

“We managed to bring many big names together thanks to the script. Everyone will have enough importance be it a full fledged role or a special appearance. Santosh Sivan is ensuring that the film is shaping up well”, Prithviraj adds.

AR Rahman's One More Magic

After continuous successes of ‘Raavanan’, ‘VTV’, ‘Enthiran’, ‘CWG Theme Song’ and ‘Puli’, A.R. Rahman’s next release ‘Jhootha Hi Sahi’ has made it bigger.

A.R. Rahman’s magical success with Abbas Tyrewala in ‘Jaane Ya Tu Jaane Na’ was a big blockbuster. Nearly after couple of years, the duo comes together for the film ‘Jhootha Hi Sahi’ (Lying is always right). Starring John Abraham and Abbas’ wife Pakhi, the film has 9 tracks that are delivered on a completely unparalleled style from his previous albums.

‘Cry Cry’ and ‘Maiyya’ have already become chartbusters and rests of the songs are haunting down the towns with its fever.

The film is about a compulsive liar, who knows nothing but just telling lies. In an unexpected manner, a girl enters his life and again constant lying gets him into discombobulated scenario.

7 Aum Arivu – Robin Cook Connection

A.R. Murugadoss should be breaking himself into terrible annoyance as the rumor mongers are unceasingly focusing on his upcoming film. ‘7 Aum Arivu’ went on floors before few months and the first schedule is almost completed. Initially, the film was reported of inspired from Hollywood movie ‘Inception’, directed by Christopher Nolan. However, as Murugadoss came up with logical reasoning, it was a perfect ending for such stories.

But now as Murugadoss has said that it will be a medical thriller, here comes yet another rumor to lookout for. It seems that the film is based on one of novels authored by Robin Cook.

Robin Cook is well known for penning medical-thrillers and some of them have already been made as TV series and Hollywood movies.

Well don’t get surprised Murugadoss! The next rumor you may hear is that your film is a sequel to Night Shyamalan’s ‘The Sixth Sense’.

Short Film With Strong Message

Short films sans messages would be a wonder indeed. Especially, the ones based on ‘accidents’ have been more on ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ factors. But Kavin Anthony makes it with a difference. His short film ‘Adhi Kaalai’ is about how psychological depressions cause road accidents.

The short film was recently launched by IPS officer Ravi and so were present actress-TV newsreader Fathima Babu, director Sargunam (Kalavani fame), Lakshmi Nathan (TN 07 AL 4777), poet Jaya Bhaskaran and many others were present. Addressing the special invitees during the event, IPS officer Ravi said, “This film is very much important for everyone. It will be constantly screened at public places so as to make them aware of such exceptional reasons behind accidents…”

Gk Acquires 'Avan Ivan'

‘Avan Ivan’ team has already gained more popularity in Telugu speaking zones. It is mainly because Vishal has large group of fans following him. His previous films in Telugu have done some good business. Not to forget director Bala and actor Aarya: their previous film ‘Siva Putrudu’ (Telugu version of ‘Naan Kadavul’) leaped with laurels. Arya’s performance as a negative character in Allu Arjun’s ‘Varudu’ was well appreciated.

Now the trio comes together for the film ‘Avan Ivan’, which will be released in Telugu as ‘Vaadu Veede’. Most of the Telugu dubbed films of Vishal were released by elder brother Vikram Krishna and so will be this one.

The film was supposed to get released in August and was later postponed to December. Now it looks like ‘Avan Ivan’ will be a sure release for Jan 2011 for the occasion of Pongal.

Meenakshi is Nandhini

Meenakshi is happy for bagging a meaty role in ‘Mandhira Punnahai’, in which she is sharing the screen space with director Karu Pazhaniappan. “It is a beautiful character”, she says.

Director A Venkatesh says that he is getting fed up with commercial formula films

Director A Venkatesh while speaking to the media said that he is getting fed up with commercial formula films. The audio launch function of the film Vallakottai which has Arjun and Hari Priya in the lead role was held recently.

Sarath Kumar in the presence of Ramanarayanan released the audio CD which was received by Parthiban. Director Venkatesh who has directed this film while speaking on this occasion said,” All the films I have directed so far were commercial films.

There use to be hero opening song, punch dialogues, sudden songs and fighting scenes in all these films. Now I am fed up with these masala film formulas.

But in Vallakottai I have tried to make this film without the usual commercial stuff. Though this formula is not there, it will be still entertaining. Dheena has composed melody songs. The famous Telugu cinematographer Anjanayalu is being introduced in Tamil through this film. This high budgeted film is being produced by T T Raja.”

Are heavy budget movies popping up the Industry?

Many would have wondered about the heavy budget movies which are being made in Tamil from the past few years creating much hype among the audiences and the movie buffs all over the world.

I think the main reasons behind the kollywood’s eye on making heavy budget movies these days are due to the directors are trying the innovative ways to catch the attention of the audiences across the globe and another reason is the producers are not getting compromise on the quality of production values these days. The other could be the makers mainly concentrating in making the film in more than one language by not bothering about the budget and spending lavishly without thinking much about later come box office revenues. On the other hand, the producers are thinking that making the high budget movies with the big star heroes like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith, Vikram, Vijay, Surya could only make their film success at the box office with record breaking collections and not looking back to invest on these star heroes films at any cost.

If we have a look on heavy budget films from the past few years, we have seen Vikram and Shriya starrer Susi Ganeshan’s ‘Kanthaswamy’ that has created immense hype was made with a record budget of Rs.30 crores at that time in the Indian Film Industry. But the film was bombarded at the box office making the investors pockets empty

Then it comes to our mind the super star Rajinikanth’s film ‘Shivaji’ which was said to be India’s most expensive film to date reportedly made with a heavy budget of Rs. 65 crores, directed by India’s most luxurious director Shankar. Though the film attracted the audience with its high production values before its release, it was remained as average hit at the box office but luckily to the benefit of the producer, though his much hyped film ‘Baba’ collapsed at the box office, Rajini filled the producers’ pockets by giving back his favoured amount by giving a hope that his films will have minimum guarantee all over the world.

Kamal Haasan’s movies are nothing far behind to Rajini’s films. His Dasavatharam was said to be enormous budget film ever made in the tamil film industry at that time with a massive budget Rs 70 crores! Though it has grossed opening collections at the box office for Kamal’s action in 10 different roles, it was not recorded as block buster as expected before.

In recent times, following the bollywood production cost of Hrithik ‘Kites’, veteran filmmaker Maniratnam made a trilingual film ‘Raavanan’ with a whopping budget Rs. 120 crores and the expectations on the film has touched the sky from the date of its launch and the film is sold at Rs. 350 crores. But after the release, the audiences were deeply disappointed with the making of Maniratnam and the film was badly bombarded at the box office making the producers’ kitty empty.

It is also well known to every one that how Vijay’s much anticipated recent release ‘Sura’ that was made with high budget was washed away worstly at the box office with no signs of screening the film even after first week of its release.

In the same path of Raavanan, this year’s yet to release India’s ever never made heavy budget trilingual film ‘Endhiran’ starring Rajinikanth and bollywood queen Aishwarya Rai in the lead which is being made in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu by ace director Shankar is creating pre release hype among the audiences all over the world. It has been made with a record budget of nearly 190 crores that could not touched by any one in the industry. But the big question in every ones mind is that how come it will gain at the box office?

We can say that kollywood is celebrating the success of small-budget films this year. Though said to be small budgeted not much expected films, they are gaining high at the box office and remaning as hits. They include Siva Manasulla Sakthi, Yaavarum Nalam, Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, Pasanga, Nadodigal, Angadi Theru etc in recent times.

There are even some other heavy budget films in line for the coming months like Kamal Haasan’s ‘Manmadhan Ambu’ with KS Ravikumar, Surya’s ’7 am Arivu ‘with the Director of Murugadoss, Ajith’s much anticipated ‘Mankatha’ Vijay’s ‘Kaavalan’ etc.

Finally we can say that as the production costs of films are elevating and the theatrical screens lessening to just a few weeks, it is becoming exceedingly difficult for the producers and distributors to make sure that their films have a successful opening in the theatres.

Who ever may be the hero the producers are investing on them and what ever the film they are making with a high or low budget, only the high production values and heavy budgets cannot make the film to sustain in the industry and record as hit. If the makers have right content with a mix of all commercial elements making it in a creative style with an apt hero for that, the audiences are ready to accept the film with warm welcome at any time.

Devisri Prasad is composing music for the Jesus Christ film

Singeetham Sreenivasa Rao who had directed Kamal Haasan starrers Mumbai Express, Kadhala Kadhala, Michael Madhana Kamarajan and Pesum Padam has also directed other Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi films.

Now he is directing a film about Jesus Christ. This film will be centered on the young life of Jesus Christ.

This film which is to be released at the International level has Pawan Kalyan in the lead role. This film is being produced in English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam languages.

The shooting of the film was launched recently in Jerusalem. Many music composers were considered for composing the music for this film but finally Devisri Prasad was selected.

S P Charan says that he is concentrating on acting

S P Charan while speaking to the media said,” I also made my debut in the music like my father. Later on I took up to film production and acting. Now I am concentrating in acting.

Initially it started in a jolly full way and then I started acting for friend’s sake. Now I am very much involved in acting. I am getting lots of offers that suit me. I am selecting the good roles and acting in them.

Many are asking me whether I will act as a hero. I am ready if the producer and director would take the risk. In the recent times, the story is only the hero.

So anybody suitable for the roles according to the story can act in it. Though I am concentrating on acting I will also concentrate in the music also. I will not leave music at any point of time. I have not stopped producing the films. I will make the announcement regarding this in due course.”

Mansoor dons the role of a cobbler

Mansoor Ali Khan while speaking to the media said,” I have so far acted in 140 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam languages. Viyaas is directing a film titled Radham in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.

I am donning the role of a cobbler. I have donned this role for the first time. My get up will be different. I am donning the role of the heroe’s father. Though this role is a cobbler, he is well versed in Shakespeare.

Now I am currently acting in Viruthagiri, Puli Vesham, Anubhavi Raja Anubhavi and Thillu Mullu. I am ready to produce a film again, if I get a story and the director that attract me. I don’t have the intention of directing. I also don’t want to jump into politics.”

Clash Of The Titles In Kollywood

It looks like most of our filmmakers and actors have got themselves struck with title fever. They have started expressing their realms against the others through titles. Before few months, there were some issues pertaining to the title of Bala’s upcoming film. The director initially wanted to title his film as ‘Avana Ivan’, which was already registered by C-grade flick. Since the makers of the latter one didn’t turn assertive for Bala’s call, they eventually gave a counter gesture of titling the film as ‘Avan Ivan’.

And again, Jeyam Ravi starrer ‘Aadhi Bhaghavan’ is yet another illustration. The film directed by Ameer started rolling before few months and a film titled ‘Bhaghavan’ has already got its project wrapped up.

What follows next is a long-drama between the happening personalities of Tamil film industry. It is Lingusamy Vs Silambarasan.

The filmmaker had previously signed Silambarasan for the film ‘Vettai’ and later replaced him with Arya in lead role. The young superstar has now got a fantastic title ‘Vettai Mannan’. It’s worth mentioning that Dhanush has acquired almost all the title of his father-in-law’s yesteryear films that includes ‘Mannan’ as well.

It’s a clear cut two-shot stroke for Simbhu.

On the dot, it’s gonna be pretty good if these technicians strive for excellence while dropping ideas onto script papers.

Manmadhan Ambu' Is Complete Now

The rehearsals have worked the best results for entire team now. Kamal Haasan, the pioneer of his visions has successfully accomplished with his power plan of completed the film’s shoot within short span of time. According to the sources, the complete schedule of filming was done during last week.

Madhavan over his twitter page has confirmed that the shooting has been wrapped up. “Wrap Party at KS Ravikumar sirs house... Fantastic house and even more fantastic food.. And the Nicest people.. Love u sir” says Maddy, who confirms that the film will hit screens in December.

The last 2-day schedule involved Kamal Haasan, Madhavan, Trisha, Ramesh Aravind (cameo role) and other technicians and actors of this film together.

'Kalavani' Oviya in Kamal Haasan film?

When we heard it we didn't know whether to believe it or not. Suddenly a news broke saying 'Kalavani' Oviya has been signed for 'Manmadhan Ambu'. The film already has a big star cast comprising Kamal, Madhavan, Sangeetha and Trisha.

So where does Oviya fit in? The answer will be more surprising. News says Oviya will pair opposite Madhavan. Then what about Trisha? The news further said both Trisha and Sangeetha are pair to Kamal Haasan.

Head spinning? Don’t mind for a while and continue. Suriya is also doing a cameo in ‘Manmadhan Ambu’. Taking a break from ‘7-am Arivu’, Suriya took part in the recent schedule that happened in Kodaikanal.

With so many stars and surprises all through the making we feel ‘Manmathan Ambu’ is straight heading to the target.

‘Mankatha’ to hit the floors on Oct 20th!

Putting all the speculations aside,it was finally announced that Ajith’s long waited much excited 50th project ‘Mankatha’ is going to start its shooting from October 20th in Hyderabad. It is directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by Dhayanidhi Alagiri.

Close sources say that director Venkat Prabhu is giving final touches to the story line and it is heard that Ajith gave a warm hug to the director after hearing to the final script made by the the director.

Venkat says “It was really heartwarming. Ajith sir liked the script very much.”

On speaking about the reports that came as Ajith will be seen in a new look in this film, Venkat says, “Yes, Ajith is working on it. And he would reveal it on October 20, the starting day of the shoot.”
