Director T.D. Kumar and producers Montage International and Das Entertainment have finally won the two-year battle they had been waging against the Censor Board to release their film Sonia. As the title suggests Sonia is loosely based on the life of the UPA Chairperson and Indian National Congress Party Chairman Sonia Gandhi. According to the
director, the Censor Board had directed him to seek permission from Sonia Gandhi before releasing the film. On a petition filed by the producers at the Bombay High Court it was held that the Cinematograph Act does not require personal approval. It was further held that the order passed by the Censor Board was against the fundamental rights of self expression. T.D. Kumar noted that Sonia is neither a defamatory nor critical film. Wonder what that film is all about? Well, to know that we have to wait till December 9th, the day set for the film’s release. Incidentally, December 9th also happens to be Sonia Gandhi’s birthday.
