Bharathiraja calls Ilayaraja “Karuvayan”

The unique musical event that took place in Chennai on November 16th had the audience in awe for about three hours. It was an event in which only the selected songs of lyricist Vairamuthu were sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam and Chithra. What was so unique about this event was that Vairamuthu recalled the situation in which he had penned the lyrics.

He fondly reminisced the day when director Bharathiraja took him to Ilayaraja. When Ilayaraja wanted to him to pen the lyrics for a composition, Vairamuthu immediately came up “idhu oru pon malai pozhudhu…” in spite of being offered one day’s time. When Bharathiraja and Vairamuthu walked out, the former reportedly told Vairamuthu: “this karuvayan (dark-skinned) has never ever asked for anyone’s phone number this far, but he is asking for yours.”
