An army of young exuberant school kids are going to invade theaters this Friday through Pattalam. This is the second production of Lingusaamy’s banner Tirupathi Brothers. A theme woven around school kids and their carefree world full of mischief and fun is seldom explored in mainstream Tamil cinema. The last movie one can recollect on these lines was Kasthuriraja’s Thulluvadho Ilamai, but even that was more grown up than what was expected from a movie featuring school children. However,
Pattalam, from its trailer, promises to be a more genuine look into the world of those who have just about stepped into their teens.
Featuring a host of newcomers along with the experienced Nadiya, the movie revolves around how the correspondent of a school (Nadiya), who also happens to be a psychiatrist, manages to influence a bunch of young school kids and turn the school into a model institution. The newcomers Arun, Kiruba, Sathya, Balaji, Vikas, Suresh, Hari, Vignesh, Guru and Irfan were chosen by debutante director Rohan Krishna after an extensive screening process during which as many as 500 aspirants were scrutinized.
The movie claims to be a very genuine representation of the lives of children in schools and the methods used to harness their potential. Any common man will be able to relate to what happens in the movie.
Rohan Krishan has been an associate of Priyadarshan and Santhosh Sivan. The story of Pattalam has been written by Sheeba Rohan, music has been scored by Jassie Gift (‘Four Students’ fame). Close to the vacation season, let’s see whether Pattalam can re-awaken the school adventure genre.
