SAA BOO THRI MUSIC REVIEW

Review by : Malathy
Music Director : Abbas RahbiVocals : Benny Dayal, Ujjayini, Vijay Yesudas, Haricharan, Benny Dayal, Rahul NambiarLyrics : Kavinpaa, Na. Muthukumar, Thamarai
Produced by three software engineers, directed by Arshadh Khan (who assisted in Manathodu Mazhaikkaalam) and starring Prajin and Aksha along with others, this movie has Abbas Rahbi scoring the music.
Suvai Karumbae---Vocals: Benny Dayal, UjjayiniLyrics: Kavinpaa

A fun number with hip-hop beats, belted out with gusto by Benny Dayal. The lyrics touch upon the hedonistic enjoyment of youth. Some spirited inputs from the guitar, keyboard and a bit of violin.

Adhu Oru Oru---Vocals: Vijay Yesudas, UjjayiniLyrics: Na. Muthukumar
Simple lyrics that have been put into very smooth rhythms by the composer. The violins, flute and the sax have been sensitively used here. Do we hear the cello too? (especially when they sing’ tholaitthom, yaasitthaen etc) This song talks of disillusionment in love. The Kiravani raga scale appears to have been used. Both the singers are so easy on the ears.

Mazhaiyae Mazhaiyae---Vocals: HaricharanLyrics: Na. Muthukumar
This does remind you of ‘Suvai Karumbae’, being in the same Karaharapriya scale. But it has solid rhythms and some wow guitar stuff! Haricharan is good as ever in articulating rediscovered love.

Saa…Boo…Thri---Vocals: Benny DayalLyrics: Na. Muthukumar
A curious opening with the line ‘kuttram purinthavan’ (music composed and sung by C.S. Jayaraman from Rathakkanneer). Benny Dayal’s voice simply overflows with mischief in this lighthearted lyric which suggests the old game ‘saa boo thrii’ to decide between choices in life. A very creative use of shehnai at the start and the rhythms are also very lively and appealing. Could hit the charts soon.

Putham Pudhithaai---Vocals: Rahul Nambiar, UjjayiniLyrics: Thamarai
Well-composed rhythms for this song, as pleasing as song No. 2. Do we hear the shehnai again? Jaunty interludes of music add spunk to this number as does the pleasant stringing together of select Karaharapriya swaras. Well sung, too.

Adhu Oru Oru---Vocals: Vijay YesudasLyrics: Na. Muthukumar
A repeat of song no. 2, with the word ‘aangal’ being substituted for ‘pengal’ in charanam. Fine rendering by Vijay Yesudas.
Verdict:
This composer has good potential, as can be seen from the way he has handled a single raga (Karaharapriya) in different srutis without sounding boring or repetitive. Good use of guitars too, especially bass guitars. The album is likely to create a flutter.
