The one-day fast by the Nadigar Sangam to show their solidarity kicked off on Saturday morning with the who's who of South Indian Film Artistes Association taking part in large numbers.
The fast is being held to protest against the atrocities meted out to the Sri Lankan Tamils by indiscreet bombing and lack of basic aid.
A grand dais has been erected at the Nadigar Sangam premises in which actors and actresses led by Sarath Kumar have gathered. The day-long fast will not have flashy speeches or emotional overtones as Sarath Kumar had urged all members to refrain from making speeches that are against the laws of the land. Moreover he has also made it clear to the members not to hurt the sentiments of any particular religion or community.
Provisions have been made to allow members of the general public to visit the place and all arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of the event.
The who's who of the industry has been pouring in ever since the fast began.
