Meena walks out of Adhivasiyum Adhisayapesiyum

Until a few months ago, actress Meena’s market value was down and no film offers were on her list. At that time, the actress had agreed to do a role in the Senthil starrer movie Adhivasiyum Adhisayapesiyum. Now with Kuselan in her kitty, offers have started poring in again for the actress.

Hence meena has demanded a pay rise from the producers of Adivasiyum Athisayapesiyum movie which the producers were not able to afford and the actress has conviniently walked out of her commitment to the movie.

Adhivasiyum Adhisayapesiyum movie would be produced by PB Babu and Sivaramakrishnan for a new company BBC International. The shooting of the movie is to be done in the forest areas of Malaysia and South America. The theme of the movie is based on the famous South African film The Gods Must be Crazy, a crazy goofy movie rocked in the eighties in which a African tribal faces the scientific modern world in the form an empty coke bottle. In Tamil the coke bottle has been replaced with a Cell phone. The entire movie would be shot in Malaysia. The movie will have comedian Senthil and comedians like Mayilsamy, Vyapuri and Ramesh Aravind are also in the crew of this comedy riot. The camerawork will be by Kasi Viswa. Music will be composed by Chakri.

However, tossing hypocrisy and the unwritten rules of the Tamil cinema bible about men not having to require a well-exercised physique out of the window, we will soon witness the first of its kind Chennai bred six-pack abs. Of somebody whom one can least expect and who has carved a niche with his 'good boy next door' looks and roles. Hold your breath! It is Surya.

We really have no clue if Surya took a cue from Shah Rukh's six pack abs for Om Shanti Om, but he sure is on his way to become the first protagonist of Tamil cinema to shed a few pounds of flab and his shirt to showcase a


chiseled look. And what is more surprising is the fact that the usually shy and diffident Surya has undergone stringent diet and gym routines to acquire this look.

Surya recently revealed his looks to a tabloid letting a sneak peek of his rippling muscles. His six packs will debut for the Gautam Menon directed Vaaranam Aayiram where he is said to play the role of a school going boy (you heard it right!) who goes on to become a macho man in the second half. Surya underwent the rigorous dietary and workout routine for about four months building up his muscles without seeking the help of steroids or enhancement pills. Alkhas, actor Aamir Khan's trainer is behind Surya's workout and diet routine and the results are more than satisfactory.

Surya also disclosed that he would retain the looks for his next venture Ayan that went on floors recently. This precisely means that the actor would have to follow his egg whites few slices of brown bread green vegetables diet and more hours of workouts at the gym. He already seems to have sacrificed his favorite mom's homemade delicacies and not to mention, his share of Jyothika's chocolate brownie dessert while eating out with her. After all, being a trendsetter has its own ups and downs.

Tamil cinema has always branded muscled hunks as villains (remember Riyaz Khan?) and considered those looks to be mean. For that matter, South India always preferred its heroes and heroines to be rotund - a whole different meaning for being healthy. In Telugu though, Allu Arjun seems to be redefining the rules by baring his torso to show off his rippled muscles.
Who knows, Surya's six packs could evince interest among his colleagues and some day Tamil cinema will make six pack abs a mandate for debutants.

Kuselan is gearing up for release and now we are getting continuous news about the film and its characters, materials that are very interesting. As Kuselan moves into its post production stage, we discovered something very significant about the movie, that Rajinikanth is after all not playing himself in Kuselan. All these days we were under the impression


that Rajini was playing Superstar in Kuselan. While it is true that Rajini is playing ‘a’ Superstar in the movie, it is not ‘the’ Superstar Rajinikanth that he is portraying. The Superstar in Kuselan has the name Ashok Kumar, much like in the Malayalam original Katha Parayumbol.

Going by the look of things, only the name will be different, the character will be everything that Rajinikanth has been over the past two decades. Of course we are not so sure about the spiritual side, but the style, the huge fan following and the down-to-earth attitude, all remain the same. Talking about Rajini playing himself reminds us of Anbulla Rajinikanth where Superstar had played himself much to our delight. There have been only a few instances when big stars have played themselves on screen which includes Kamal’s special appearance in the climax of Nala Damayanthi. So, for those of you who were expecting another Anbulla Rajinikanth you won’t be getting exactly what you were thinking of but something very close. It will be Anbulla Rajinikanth going by the name Ashok Kumar, won’t make much of a difference.

Another interesting piece of information about Kuselan is about a special song that has been woven around the Superstar. Remember the lines of the Athiradee number in Sivaji that went ‘Billa, Ranga, Basha….. ’; Kuselan will be going one up with an entire song that has been written by Vaalee with names of most of the Superstar’s hits over the decades. And that’s not all, the song was shot entirely at the Rammoji Rao film city where Thotta Tharani had put up another stunning set for the Superstar after the great work in Sivaji. The set is said to have cost around 1.80 crores and will surely be a highlight of the movie.

She’s sexy, sensitive, humble and honest. Behindwoods enjoyed chatting with her one Sunday morning when she spoke about being on the sets with Gautham Menon, Surya and Simran (her new best friend in Kollywood).

BW: What is Vaaranam Aayiram about?

Divya: It’s the life of one man, from childhood to old man played by Surya, and how we all form a part of his life, how we enter and exit his life. It’s the relationship between this man and society. It’s a very, very interesting life story.

An Indian Forrest Gump?

Where did you hear that?

The director, Gautham Menon, seems to have said something like that.

Well, I guess if he has….then maybe there’s something to it.

“I play Surya’s childhood

sweetheart.”

What is your role specifically in it?
I play Priya in the film, Surya’s childhood sweetheart, and you’ll see my life in the movie from when I’m 14 to 21 years old.

What is it like to work with Surya?

First of all, Surya with that six pack is so hot. And on the sets we were all so impressed with his discipline. For instance, we were at Dehra Dun, having dinner, and all of us were hogging, but Surya was eating broccoli with no salt or oil!

Can you talk a little more about your time on the sets of Vaaranam Aayiram ?

Sure. We all had a blast. Simran and I were up to pranks all the time. I really found a friend in her. My first friend in the industry. The funny thing is, we’ve been shooting for a year, but Simran and I met only in the last three months, and became fast friends. On the sets everyone used to joke: ‘Good thing these two didn’t meet up earlier!” Gautham Menon likes silence on the sets but then even he would crack up. And the ADs (assistant directors) were all fun to be with. There were some disturbing scenes we had to enact but none of us used glycerine –we just cried.”

What would be different about Vaaranam Aayiram ?

A large part of it is shot in San Francisco. On the famous Berkeley campus, where Surya plays a student. We’ve shot a lot in Danush Kodi. It’s beautiful there. And I also believe this might be the first Tamil film shot at the Indian Military Academy.

Is it safe to guess then that Surya is in the army?

Hmmmm….well, if you feel that’s what it could strongly mean, then maybe it is so!

Your impressions of working with Gautham Menon?
I admire Gautham. He’s very inspiring.

And your time with your co-star, Sameera Reddy?
I never did meet her.

Oh, so you don’t have any scenes together in the movie?
No, we don’t.

A lot of people ask me that, but it has never been a problem. I enjoy it. There’s no animosity in either place. In fact, I get a lot of love and support from both industries. I’m fluent in Kannada. And because I did my schooling in Ooty, I can read and write Tamil.

Taare Zameen Per- I cried buckets. I also admire Heat , Castaway, The Bucket List (I adore Jack Nicholson) and Scarface. Tamil: I like all the Mani Ratnam films.

Though Lal Jose had a disastrous result at the box office with his latest film 'Mulla', the heroine who debuted with the film, Meera Nandan has become a success. She got rave reviews for her performance.

The television anchor turned actress is now Kollywood-bound with her first movie 'Valmiki' shaping up well. This movie produced by the Media Company of Ananda Vikatan, is directed by G Anandanarayanan and has 'Kaloori' fame Akhil as the hero. The movie is said to be a 'soft and sweet love story with some soul stirring music'.

Meera Nandan, the 17 year old Kochi based actress says that she is not interested in glamour roles. The actress wants to do only meaningful family-oriented films like Lachi in 'Mulla' and Vandana in her debut Tamil film.

The plots of both these films have some similarities. Both have slum based stories and the heroes are pickpockets and small time gangsters whose lives change drastically. Lachi in 'Mulla' is accidentally forced to take care of a child, while Vandhana in 'Valmiki' runs a crèche.

"Actually, I never had any intention of acting in Tamil movies. But the story of 'Valmiki' and the technicians associated with it impressed me so much that I accepted the role" says Meera. She now has plenty of offers coming her way from both languages.

She might just go on to become a big name in Kollywood, just as many of her Malayalee predecessors did.

Sundar C. in an MGR remake?

Actor-Director Sundar C is reportedly keen to start a movie that would be a remake of the yesteryear MGR hit 'Ulagam Sutrum Valiban'.

Sundar C, who is an actor to reckon with in the industry, is working in half-a-dozen movies. However he is keen to direct and act in the lead role for 'Ulagam Sutrum Valiban'.

The original version was directed and acted by MGR. In the movie, MGR plays a double role as a scientist and his modern-swashbuckler brother trying to protect the world from a gang of evil doers led by scientist/ entrepreneur Ashokan, who try to steal a formula in order to make bombs out of lightning.

Though Sundar C, has his own creative freedom to remake 'Ulagam Sutrum Valiban', one will have to admit that it would be an impossible task for him to recreate the magic MGR ever so beautifully brought about in his film.

This is a season for remakes and so let's wait and see what Sundar C. has in store for us.

A man learns the secret of how to run the world and he tries to overrule the God. Goddess Aathiparasakthi comes to save the world from the clutches of the evil and she destroys evil forces.

The main feature of the serial is that its telecast during the month of Aadi, the auspicious month for Tamil Women. Nava Velli is directed by Aravind Raj. It will be telecast on Jaya TV from the 30th of this month.

Simran also has Tamil movies, Vaaranam Ayiram, Seval, TN07 AL-4777, Aiyantham Padai to name a few.

Rotary Award for AR Rahman

Musician A.R. Rahman’s poise is unbelievable. As stalwarts such as directors K. Balachander and Mani Rathnam, lyricists Vaali and Vairamuthu, playback singers S.P. Balasubramaniam, Hariharan and Chithra, and actors Kamal Haasan and Prabhu showered accolades, he sat on stage wearing his trade mark, child-like smile.

The renowned artistes were featured in a video production of the Rotary Club of Madras, screened here on Tuesday, when the Club honoured him with the ‘Lifetime achievement award’.

While commending Mr. Rahman’s musical genius, almost all of them spoke of his humility. “He is undoubtedly a great revolutionary in Indian film music. But what strikes me is his humility,” said Mr. Balachander, who has worked with him in films such as ‘Duet’ and ‘Parthalae Paravasam’. “Rahman’s success follows years of intense hard work with focus,” said Mr. Vaali. Mr. Mani Rathnam deemed him one of the most director-friendly music composers, and Mr. Haasan said he was looking forward to working with the music wizard in his next project ‘Marmayogi’, in the nearly 25-minute video production.

“I am really moved. This is a great honour. There is a lot more to do … I feel like a slate waiting to be written on,” Mr. Rahman said.

An impromptu question and answer session which followed evoked some candid and funny responses from the musician. Queried on the research he did for films such as ‘Jodha Akbar’, he said: “Oh yes, we did a lot of research and did not use any.”

On the music that he liked listening to, he said ‘Carpenters’, the music of composers K.V. Mahadevan, Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy and particularly those of P. Susheela, were his all-time favourites.

recently heard that Dasavatharam pirated DVD is being played in Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses. I'm really worried about the future of the Tamil film industry since people like Kamalhaasan and Aascar film Ravinchandran put in lot of effort and money to make a film like this.

I'm really shocked hearing this news. That too in the government transport, the pirated DVD is shown. I'm sure that government is taking strict action against piracy. Hope something is done about this too. Please forward this to relevant people to take necessary action. The movie was played in a bus which is running between Salem and Bangalore. I hope Behindwood team will take this forward to save the Tamil film industry.
