Ponnambalam- The Next T. Rajendran

With various avatars launched in Tamil film industry, here’s yet another bandwagon on the rise – stunt choreographers turning into filmmakers. Stunt Choreographer Punch Bharath recently made his debut directorial with ‘Indra Sena’ ready to hit screens while Kanal Kannan’s onscreen debut with ‘Sattrumun Kidaitha Thagaval’ won critical acclaims.
Now another stunt choreographer Ponnambalam is making his debut as producer, director, actor andmusic director with the film ‘Idiyudan Koodiya Mazhai’. The film is touted to be an action thriller and features Chandrakanth as another lead actor along with Ponnambalam.

Surya-Karthi team up thanks to Sun Pictures!

Sun Pictures has decided to make a film starring the actor brothers Surya and Karthi. Instead of buying and marketing the film, Sun Pictures has decided to produce it themselves. Sun Pictures is already producing ‘Endhiran’ directed by Shankar and starring Rajini and Aishwarya Rai. Recently, Actors Association President Sarath Kumar had commented that films with a multi-star cast featuring more than one hero would be successful. As if in response to that, Sun Pictures has come up with this project featuring Surya and Karthi. Surya is presently acting in ‘Ezhaam Arivu’ and ‘Ratha Charitram’. Karthi is acting in ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’. Instead of waiting for them to complete all these assignments, it looks like the new film could start any time. Once the heroine, director and technicians are finalized, we can expect a formal announcement.

Madhavan – The Quiz Master

Kollywood called him ‘Chocolate Boy’. But the actor was bold enough to stride on a different path choosing unimaginable roles.Just imagine if any actor could enjoy the privilege of rubbing shoulders with Big B, Ben Kingsley, Kamal Haasan, Aamir Khan and others within short span of time. Well, Maddy had it paid for his dignified and somber in manner and committed to keeping promises. Now, it’s time for the actor to take on a new avatar. This time, it’s all about getting back to small screen (Maddy had acted in several small screen series – Sea Hawks and Saaya before getting into films). Siddartha Basu, the maker of several top charting quiz shows including Mastermind, Kaun Banega Crorepathi is launching a new quiz show that doesn’t offer any rooms for intellects and GK maniacs. It’s just about fun and play just like Kushboo’s ‘Jackpot’ that has families playing against another in groups. If what we heard from the closer sources is believed to be true, then Madhavan has been signed for the task of hosting it at NDTV Imagine.Till now, nothing has been officially confirmed and maybe you can expect some good news shortly.

The hit pair of ‘Angadi Theru’, Anjali and Magesh are coming together for the third time. They were earlier signed by the same ‘Angadi Theru’ banner Ayngaran for another film. Now Shakthi Chidambaram who is doing an action film with Arjun has signed the couple to play the young leads in the film.

Vijay in a Rajini film

“Ella Pugazhum Oruvan Oruvanukke… Nee Nadhi Pole Odi Kondu Iru…” was the opening line of a hit number from a super hit of Ilaya Thalapathi Vijay. And Vijay is serious about nothing but his work. He is returning with a bang by releasing three films in a year.
The surprise doesn’t end there. While speaking at a function in Trichy to release the audio the film 'Veluthu Kattu' director and father of Vijay SA Chandrashekar said that he is going to remake some of his old hits with the new generation of stars and technicians.
His first in the series will be the remake of 'Naan Sigappu Manithan' starring Rajinikanth, K. Bhagyaraj and Ambika. The film was super hit in the 80s. It was vendetta tale in which the hero a self-styled vigilante and goes after the bad guys after he loses his sister and mother to the villains.
And you guessed it right. SAC is planning to cast Vijay in the role of Rajini.

Vijay Missing - Exhibitors Infuriated

Actor Vijay seems to be drenched in severe perplexity as the theatre owners have deliberately cornered him up for the losses. Things weren’t complicated until the theatre owners associations were invited personally to sort down the issue. But as S.A. Chandrasekhar kept on delaying the meeting, the theatre owners associations had no options other than hosting the press meet to make official confirmations. During this meet organized by them, the executive members formally addressed the gathering about this count. The exhibitors and theatre owners have been incurring heavy losses right from Vijay’s ‘Aadhi’ till his recent release ‘Sura’ (except ‘Pokkiri’). Forgoing the previous losses, they have now justly requested him to compensate the loss of 35% to them.Previously, Rajnikanth had done the same thing for his ‘Baba’ and Kamal Haasan for his ‘Hey Ram’.It’s almost like an informal deadline for Vijay as the union members are now planning for more actions, which will be announced by next week.Even at this critical juncture, there hasn’t been any report from the part of Vijay as the actor isn’t available to their calls.

Silambarasan gearing up for Poda Podi

After getting through vivid confusions over choosing his next project, Silambarasan has finally zeroed down on Poda Podi. Touted to be a breezy romantic entertainer, the film’s photo shoot was held before few months with Bollywood’s most happening photographer Daboo Ratnani clicking promotional pictures.
With accordance to heavy snowfall in Canada, Silambarasan had shelved the film’s shooting and took on with Gautham Menon’s Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya. Much prior to this film’s release, he had plans about commencing his own directorial Valiban, which was supposed to be produced by SS Chakravarthy of Nic Arts.
On the spur moment, his plans were changed as SS Chakravarthy got himself involved in two projects (featuring his son Johnny of Renigunta in lead role) at the same time. With no options left, Simbhu has now decided to kick-start Poda Podi that will feature Sarath Kumar’s daughter Varalakshmi in female lead.
His closer sources have revealed that soon after completing this project, Simbhu will sing Mani Ratnam’s untitled film, which is set to be simultaneously made in Hindi and Tamil. The Hindi version featuring Vivek Oberoi in lead will have Mani Ratnam’s associate wielding the megaphone while the Mani himself will direct Silambarasan with Raj Kiran performing a prominent role.

Maa – Tamil Movie Review

Starring: DeepakDirection: Fathima BeeviMusic: Gideon KarthikProduction: Kalai VizhiPhysical disabilities don’t make a person any different from other normal individuals. That is what Maa attempts to say. And it is done through a story of love. A young woman falls in love with a man. But, she is not aware that her love interest is physically challenged. Would she have loved him in spite of this disability? Anyhow, there comes a time when she has to face the fact. And, she is not able to accept it, blaming him for hiding things from her. But, to cheat her, hiding the truth about himself was not what he wanted to do as there were many instances when he tries to tell her about his disability. But, she always brushes aside anything that he wants to tell her until it becomes too late.
So, does the love stand or does the disability come in the way? At first, she finds it tough to come to terms with the facts. But, then she realizes that a physical impairment is just a peripheral part of life, never to come in the way of love or anything else in life for that matter. She decides that her love is above such issues. She tells him the same, but he reacts in an unexpected way. How does she respond to it with her life?
Maa is more than just a movie; it is a statement. It attempts to say that there is nothing called a ‘disability’. The crew behind the movie itself is proof of the fact that the differently-abled can do anything that a fully physically able person can. Almost everyone involved in the making of the film is challenged in some way or the other, but they have all risen above it to pull off something as big as making a full-length movie. This includes the director Fathima Beevi and the composer Gideon Karthik who are visually challenged.
Maa also attempts to document the problems that the differently-abled face in day-to-day life. The absence of public amenities that can be used by them like ramps and toilets and the unequal treatment that is sometimes meted out to them is also depicted effectively. But, above all the movie shows that with courage and determination, they know how to overcome them.
Maa is indeed a special effort. It might be very clear that this is not the regular commercial outing. It is a story of will and hope in the face of adversity. The movie should serve as an eye opener to society about the problems of the differently-abled while also urging us to treat them as equals.

Raavanan Unloaded

When things are getting shot-up high on expectations with Manirathnam’s ‘Raavanan’, it has still got lots of post production works to be done. According to the sources, A.R. Rahman has now postponed his other projects and is vigorously working on background score. It’s worth mentioning that Manirathnam is spending day and night at A.R. Rahman’s studio and the both have gone insomniac. Unlike other projects, A.R. Rahman is seemingly coming up with different scores for every version to savor for the tastes of regional audiences.A.R. Rahman has been orchestrating the chorus parts from signers in United States and will complete the portions by first week of June. Sooner or later, academy award winner will travel all throughout the globe to promote the film since he has more values for his international recognition.

Prabhu Deva - Bollywood's New Face

Prabhu Deva recently directed a Hindi film titled Wanted and released it. Salman Khan did the lead role in this film. This film did well at the box office. It is important note that this film is the remake of the Tamil film Pokkiri which had Vijay as the hero. Actress Sridevi has produced this film. This film which was made at a budget of Rs 35 Crores made a profit of Rs 60 Crores. After this Prabhu Deva came back to Tamil. He is now directing a film titled Itch which has Jayam Ravi and Hansika Motwani in the lead roles. Now Sridevi’s company has decided to produce a film which will have Prabhu Deva in the lead role. Prabhu Deva has also agreed to act in this film. Kareena Kapoor has been approached to do the female lead role.

Anjali goes the glamour way

Anjali, who impressed everyone playing performance oriented roles in 'Kattradhu Thamizh' and 'Angadi Theru', goes the glamour way. She recently appeared for a song in 'Maharaja' opposite Sathya in skimpy costumes.
Produced by J Ravi and directed by D Manoharan, the movie features Nasser, Anitha, M S Viswanathan, Saranya and Karunaas in key roles.
Says Anjali: "I am happy and thrilled with the success of ‘Angadi Theru’. ‘Maharaja’ will showcase me in different light. I have tried comedy in the movie."
On taking to glamour, she says, "It is a part of the story and I did what the script wanted". Interestingly, Anitha who entered the tinsel town with 'Samurai' opposite Vikram is now geared up for her next innings with this movie. 'Maharaja' will have Anitha shaking legs with Nasser for an item dance.

Kamal film titled ‘Manmadhan Ambu’?

Kamal Haasan’s forthcoming film, which was initially tentatively titled ‘Yavarum Kelir’, has undergone a name change now. If sources are to be believed, the new title of the movie is ‘Manmadhan Ambu’.
Remember one of the lines of the evergreen song ‘Andhi Mazhai Pozhigiradhu…’ from the Ulaga Nayagan’s 100th venture ‘Raaja Parvai’ has the words ‘Manmadhan Ambu’. Apparently inspired by it, the film has been titled so, sources say.
Produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin on Red Giant Movies banner, the movie would bring together Kamal and K S Ravikumar once again. They had earlier given hits like ‘Avvai Shanmugi’, ‘Thenali’, ‘Panchathanthiram’ and ‘Dasavatharam’.
The film has Trisha opposite Kamal with Madhavan playing an important role. Devi Sri Prasad is scoring the music and a poetic number, presumably the title song of the film, was recorded at the music composer’s studio recently.

Udhayanidhi ready to take off

He entered the industry with a tag of VIP producer. Though his first film 'Kuruvi' may not have made him very happy his following attempts were successful and he cemented his place as a heavy weight producer. Udhayanidhi Stalin and his Red Giant Movies are revered names in trade circles today.
Udhayanidhi is currently producing two mega stars movies. One the Kamal-Trisha film directed by K S Ravikumar and the other is Suriya-Shruthi Haasan film directed by A R Murugadoss. After these movies Udhayanidhi is taking a new avatar of an actor.
Owing to his friends' pressure Udhayanidhi has finally said yes to acting. But unlike many Udhayanidhi rightly prefers a humorous subject for his launch. The first one to ready a script for Udhayanidhi was Dharani and the former was uncomfortable with it because it was an out and out action script. After Dharani the scripts of Radha Mohan and Gautham Menon were also discussed. But the luck has favoured Rajesh, who gave the cute romantic film ‘Siva Manasula Sakthi’.
Udhayanidh who recently saw the un-mixed rushes of Rajesh’s new film 'Boss Engira Baskaran' was thoroughly impressed and asked the director if he had a similar subject. The next day Rajesh narrated a story and Udhayanidhi was in splits laughing. The story was approved on the spot. Rajesh will start the film once the first copy of 'Boss’ is ready. Heir rising story, this is.

Vinay’S Re-Entry

Lottery king Martin is happy that his company is producing the film Ilaignyan. He has also come forward to produce some other films. The next film they are producing will have Vinay in the lead role. Somehow Vinay has come into Martin’s circle. But without deciding the director, Vinay has been paid the advance. Now lots of assistant directors are at the back of Vinay to narrate their stories. Lets wait and see whom luck is going to favour.

SINGAM MOVIE REVIEW

Starring: Suriya, Anushka, Prakash Raj, Vivek, Manoramma.Direction: HariMusic: Devi Sri PrasadProduction: BIG Pictures
The much-awaited Hari-Suriya combo is back in this landmark 25th film of Suriya. The story was initially narrated to Vijay for his 50th film by Hari but for some reasons Vijay could not do it and Suriya lapped it up.Throughout the career graph of Suriya, the actor has diligently worked towards balancing the niche and the mass and this time around he has proven once again that he can deliver a commercial masala flick with as finesse as he can deliver a performance-oriented film. It is Suriya all over; the guy stumps with some gravity defying stunts, mouths a few intense sentimental dialogues, floors his lady partner passionately and challenges the baddies and cleanses the society from obnoxious elements.Durai Singam is the SI of Nallur police station who is into the police force mainly to satisfy his father. His ambition is to expand his provision stores

business to a super market. All the same, he is sincere in his work and is the darling of his town as he settles many disputes in his town amicably. Mayilvaganan (Prakash Raj), the fraudster from Chennai, involved in criminal activities, gets trapped into a police case which requires him to sign in Nallur police station for a period of 15 days. There is a proxy who comes to do this job in the police station which triggers an encounter between Prakash Raj and Suriya that leads into a series of events between the two which form the rest of Singam. Meanwhile, an offshoot of this plot is the love angle between Anushka and Suriya, the former comes to the village to her grand parents place for vacation and bumps in to the latter. Thankfully, it is not love at the second meeting but something that happens gradually with believable events. Vivek as Erimalai takes charge of comedy in Singam as Suriya’s subordinate and acquits himself well. The comedy scenes do bring the intended effect and the lorry scene which results in Vivek’s suspension tops the list. There are many such enjoyable instances which are sure to get into the comedy channels soon.Anushka looks good and acts too. When she is on the phone with Suriya and gets caught by her father Nasser, the instant play of expression to get out of the situation is noteworthy. The lady does have a good future. She rides on twin horses with glamorous costumes in the song sequences and a homely demeanor in the rest of the film. Radha Ravi and Sumithra as the parents of Suriya do a convincing job. The other supporting cast members are satisfactory. Music by Devi Sri Prasad is nothing to rave about except the En Idhayam number. However, the morphing technique adopted to cover a few frames in this number is unwarranted. Background score is also ordinary. True to the name Singam, the film is dominated by action sequences but there is no blood and gore. Cinematographer Priyan has done a decent job. Director Hari has stuck to his genre and has delivered a crisp film. Although the events and the premise are not something new in Singam and the formula of one scene each of ‘action-romance-sentiments-comedy', is strictly adhered to, he should be credited for rendering an engaging and entertaining product. He succeeds in holding the interest of the audience to a larger extent and satisfies the viewers. However, in the second half, the interactions between the villain and hero get a bit drab and seem to drag on. There is not much of an intelligence displayed by the villain to counter the hero except in the climax. On the whole, Hari has concocted and packaged his masala contents in the right proportion and has served a tasty dish.

Suriya proves to be the most estimable, proficient actor upon whom the producers can blindly invest more projects. After proving to be a top-class actor with unique scripts, he proves of his efficiency in a mass-oriented role.

Verdict: Engaging masala

Triple offer from Vijay

Vijay is at an important cross road now. With controversies and criticisms mounting Ilaya Thalapathi has finally decided to put everything to rest and make every body happy.
As the first step Vijay has decided to release three films this year to make the theatre owners happy. Siddique's ‘Kaavalkaran’ is 60% complete and is generating good trade talk so far. ‘Jayam’ Raja is also ready for ‘Velayudham’ and there will be an official announcement next week.
Also there is news about Vijay giving his consent to do the remake of ‘3-Idiots’ in Tamil. It’s likely that Vijay will announce this at the launch function of ‘Velayudham’.
With these sudden developments the theatre owners are convinced and are ready for Vijay films again.

Vijayakanth in MGR film

‘Ulagam Sutrum Valiban’ is one of the ever green box office hits of Tamil cinema. Even after 37 years the film is still a money spinner on its re-runs. After finishing ‘Ulagam Sutrum Valiban’ MGR announced a film 'Kizhakku Africavil Raju' as a sequel to ‘Ulagam Sutrum Valiban’ for which he even conducted location hunting tour in Africa.
But as destiny had it MGR became more politically active and finally ascended to the throne of Tamil Nadu in 1977. He also voluntarily put an end his film career and that decision shelved his ambitious project 'Kizhakku Africavil Raju' as well.
Now after more than 30 years Captain Vijayakanth is reviving the film for himself. Captain is currently acting and directing 'Virudhagiri' which will hit the theatres later this year. After that Vijayakanth will take up the project 'Kizhakku Africavil Raju' and go from a start to finish schedule.
MGR formula is considered an ever winning formula. With the number of his film titles repeated and his songs re-mixed the craze is still very much there. With Captain daring to take up a dropped MGR film there may be many more thinking of remaking his films.

Hari’S ‘Singam’ Punch

Few hours are pending for the release of ‘Singam’ and the entire town is curiously waiting to catch up with the shows. It’s worth mentioning that Mayajaal has decided to screen 35 shows everyday till the weekend.

Well, we have some highlighting attributes about Hari’s punch dialogues in this film. From his previous films, it has been evident about realms of punches.

Who can forget this stunning take on ‘Saamy’ that had the striking lines uttered by Vikram?

Of course, ‘Singam’ will not run of such elements and Hari has a valid reason for it as he says, “These lines weren’t purposely articulated for Surya, but for the characterization he plays. It would have been the same for any actor as it will have no variations…”

On Monday, ‘Kanden’, a film starring the young actor in the lead role went on floors in the presence of veterans of the Tamil film industry. Produced by TCS on Sri Siva Selvanayagi Amman Movies banner, the movie is directed by Mugil.

KAMAL AND TRISHA VOICE FOR DSP

Trisha’s next Tamil venture, to be produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin, will have Kamal Haasan pairing up with her. The film’s music is being scored by Devi Sri Prasad (DSP). The lady was recently in Chennai to render a few poetic verses for this yet-to-be-named film. Kamal also joined Trisha at the studio to record his voice. Apparently, this is not a song but something like a singsong.Kamal, known for his versatility in all fields in the film industry, has already rendered several songs and this is not something new for the actor. A few kids also joined the actors in the singsong, we are told.

Prabhu, Karthik And Now Sarath Kumar

Gone are those days, when the yesteryear heroes had no intentions about giving up their images. But some of them were quite affirmative towards moving to the other arena by performing prominent roles. First it was actor Prabhu, who stepped onto this epitome later followed by yesteryear romantic hero Suresh (Ajith Kumar’s ASAL).Recently, actor Karthik’s presence in ‘Maanja Velu’ has evoked more actors to travel on same paths. Supreme Star Sarath Kumar has now openly admitted that he will no more keep himself adhered to star image. It has been relevantly evident with his recent release ‘Kola Kolaya Mundhrika’. Winning rave reviews for his fresh attempt, the actor has assured that he is open to all offers including a cameo role. The actor has already started taking on with such offers in various regional films including a Malayalam, in which he plays a wildlife photographer.

Game Starts In June

Big releases are ready to glide through the theatres for the next couple of months and medium-low budgets flicks are awaiting for their own way now. Around 12 films have been released within last 3 weeks due to unavailability of theatres.

Previously, the producers of medium and low budget films kept themselves away from releasing along with big tickets. With no options left in hand, they have pertinently changed the scenario.
